==

Oh jeez!this is yummy!

This kind of questions come to me quite often after I went abroad:

"Hey,Doug, what do you guys usually eat in Sydney?Hamburger?pizza?"

It is common that most Taiwanese people have stereotype about the life in the States or here in Australia.

Alright, let me explain all these to you.well~let's put it this way,in most of the big cities such as NYC or Sydney. There is a great amount of immigrants coming from differnt corners of the world which makes the cities "multi-cultural".

Take Sydney as an example.Differnt immigrants tend to stay in the same area that seperates certain areas. The Chinese concept "四海為家"makes "China town"  everywhere in big cities.Korean people also find their own area in downtown Sydney. You can see lots of korean shops and there are more koreans than aussies walking on the streets. There are even more nationalities. You can meet people from any countries that you can possibly think of.

Some of these people keep their original lifestyle. They start to open restaurants, grocery stores, shops and so on.Differnt restaurants with singns with different languages can be seen on the streets. These restaurants provides people with a variety of choices.

Schools realise the fact that students are multi-cultural.In my univeristy, the Unisveristy of New South Wales(UNSW), the cafeteria offers sushi,Chinese,Thai fried noodle,Malaysian Laksa,Indian curry and nan, burgers, fish n' chips and Italian focaccia, pasta and lasagna.

I guess the question has been answered after the above explanation.Though,to save up money, students usually cook themselves at the dorm.

You must be craving to see some nice photos of the yummy food.Luckily, bisides the heaps of photos I took in the restaurants,I took some more last week when I was invited to a Spanish dinner party by my hispanic friends. They came either from Spain or Mexico and ,trust me, the food they made is, with no doubt, authentic Spanish style flavour.

Spanish dinner party

lobster

pancake and crepe'

Thai

You can also find Taiwanese!

Greek

American burger

Japanese curry

fairy floss stand

Ribs

Brekky

fish n' chips

italian

chocolate bar

Italian pasta

Germany(Sausage n beer)

good or bad? It's give and take..

I still remember that when I first arrived at Sydney,we had a orientation for all the exchange students from all over the world. In one of the speeches, the speech maker told us that we'll encounter two culture shocks, one was when we frist arrive in Sydney and the other one is when we go back to our home countries. The former one makes sense to me but, seriously,as for the latter statement,I simply thought: "no way!that's my home, how can it be possible that I am not even familiar with my own homeland?"

However,I have to say that they were right.I DID felt a lil bit weird and, to my astonishment, I was changed. The following article is quoted from my personal blog.I wrote it on Feb. 1st, two weeks after I went back to Taiwan from Australia for Chinese new year.I also put the cooments that teacher Frog left on my board.

good or bad?it's give and take....

after 6 months in staying in Australia
i'm back in Taiwan for almost two weeks
from a country where ppl speak english to another where ppl speak mandarin
from a country where ppl walk and drive on the lefthand side to righthand side
from a country where ppl on the streets are most whites to asians
back here,
things that were the most familiar seems not that familiar anymore

getting on the bus heading to the mrt station, i dun even remember the price of bus ticket
saying "excuse me" and "sorry" to ppl who know no english
trying to press the button on traffic lights when crossing the streets
finding everything just soo cheap that i can't stop myself buying too much
these are just without the question easy to recover

the love that used to be around me came back to me again
family, best friends and relatives
their love seems to be especially treasurable and sweet than ever
it is the strongest feeling ever!

everything that i've been looking forward came to reality
walking on my best shopping area
playing balls with my dog
hanging out with my lovely grandma
surrounded by the modern buildings,i started to buy those fashionable clothes and accessaries as i did before
chatting with freinds in the night markets,i had all the snacks i've been missing for ages and those my friends showed me on webcame when i was in sydney

everything seems to be the same, just as how they used to be
the only thing that changes is me, myself
surprisingly,i changed,
yeah!i did!
i didnt realise it until my friends told me that
i really dunno if this is a good thing or not
for those good ones,i will keep them
as for those bad ones, just give me some time,my buddies!
i need some time to adjust myself
there are too much that i cant explain to u and sth u will not understand at the moment
u dunno what happened to me
u dunno my life out there
u dunno how i feel deep in my mind for tha past few months
u dunno who i met
u dunno abt too many stories that i can hardly explain to u

whenever i feel upset,it is u guys that are always by my side
all i had in my mind is that once i'm back
everything's gonna be fine..
and this is why i felt really bad hearing what u said that day
well....just give me some time
i'm still me!
my chrarcteristics are still in my blood
it is just temporary.........
time cures everything...

Teacher Frog's comment

It's a tricky thing to study abroad. You thought you did
not change, but in fact, you can never be the same person
again. You have seen another world, another way of
living, and thousands of possibilities. You realize the
island that you've spent your whole life, the city that
once was your whole world, is ..... merely a tiny dot in
humanity. How can a frog, having jumped out of the well
and swum in the big ocean, goes back and lives in his well
again? (I'm talking about me :-)

So, take time, and be happy...... and post more articles.
I only put your articles on for one day, and a girl has
responded to your insteresting writings. To save your
trouble, I'll copy her response here, as a happy ending.

*Live!! * The FIRST country that goes to 2007--Australia!!

I could have left Sydney earlier during this holiday, the firework in Sydney is one of the main reasons why I decided to stay here. Today is the 31st of Dec.

Tourists from all over the world flocked into metropolitan Sydney; there is no choice but detour to avoid congestion in downtown Sydney. The detour made me walk from central station to Prymont Point Park, which is a 20 mins walk. Finally, I got to the park.

Picnicking and having BBQ and take-away pizzas on the grass with a view of the landmark in Sydney, the harbour bridge, thousands of people are waiting for the moment to countdown to year 2007.At 12 sharp in midnight, people in different vantage points listen to the radio broadcasting and countdown the last few seconds of 2006. 3! 2! 1! , the fireworks goes from the top point of the bridge, it is amazing! The fireworks goes with the black eyed peas songs from the radio. The continuous fireworks lightened the sky of Sydney. Surprisingly, fireworks goes out from the skyscrapers at darling harbour! The fireworks , harbour bridge, the opera house and the skyscrapers made a perfect picture! Thank god! I’m freaking lucky that I’m one of them here in Sydney enjoying the world-renowned fireworks show. I’m not gonna say too much. The feeling is beyond description! You’ll see when you look at the pictures! I took them just 24 hr ago! Ok, I didn’t sleep at all last night.laters!

here we got a special guest-Becky (Douglas's friend in Sydney)

Today' I've got my friend in Sydney, Becky, to tell u about college party life.  Since I have mentioned about parties in my previous article, as an *Aussie, Becky's gonna tell u about a real party held in my uni.

Hi, people in Taiwan! Firstly I wanna introduce myself. I am a *hongkie girl and has been living in Australia since the age of 6. Today I am gonna tell you about a formal party. In Australian Universities, there are many *faculties. Myself is a Commerce Faculty student and that's why I met Douglas. Every year there is the *Annual Commerce Ball. The purpose of the ball is to celebrate the year of uni life. Usually you go to the ball with a partner, but of course you can choose to attend alone. Each year there will be different *themes for the ball. This year we have the theme of *"mafia". Everyone who attends the ball has to dress up in the theme of mafia, yet dress up in *formal dress code. This is a great chance for many girls (I am one of them haha) to dress up in very nice formal *gowns.

The ball is usually held in very expensive hotel, but tickets are sold to students at discount! This year the ball is held in *Shangri-La hotel. On the night, we were served with 3 delicious *courses, accompanied by brilliant performances. There are also many awards, such as the best dressed, the *bachelor of the night and the *bachelorette of the night.

Basically, the ball is very fun because everyone gets to dress up nicely and celebrate the year at a very nice place.

I hope you have enjoyed my article today^^

Douglas will translate for you:
*Aussie - Australian的縮寫,也是一種很簡易親切ㄉ用法.通常在奧運會上妳會聽到澳洲人民為自己國家加油:Aussie!Aussie!Aussie!oi,oi,oi!
*faculties-學院,像UNSW就有faculty of commerce,faculty of law,faculty of arts and etc.
*course-一道菜,舞會上一般有three courses: entree', main course and desserts.
*bachelor/bachelorette-學士和女學士,前面加上"the bachelor/bacherlorette of the night"的意思是全場最帥及最美的男女學士.

here's a picture of my friend and I (right) in the dress theme of mafia. the photo is taken by a professional camera man on the night.

> hahaha 。
> I want to go abroad and travel around world like you someday .
> Yes , it will be realized someday . =)

hahaha! but why is it funny? i dun get it! ha!
anywayz, I've got some advices for u. if u wanna travel a lot without spending a lot of money, u can try to apply for exchange student when u go to college.  this is a really good policy!exchange students dun have to pay the tuition of the exchange univeristy that saves u a large amount of money.  as an exchange student, u pay the tuition of ur home university and the living expenses.  the tuition in foreign countries are unbelievably costly!!  it is like 20 times of taiwanese universities. also, u can travel around the country where u r exchanged to!like many of my friends who went to europe for exchange, they can travel around all the european countries during their one-year program since they can simply catch a train to the neighboring country without applying for any visa! I also travelled a lot in Australia after i came. i will post some articles and pictures of my travel experiences here later! again, thank u very much for leaving me a msg! i am getting more motivated now! gotta go to bed, it's like 4 in the morning now! nite!

Party animals n alcoholics

Ur fed up with welcoming ceremonies(or so-called開學典禮) where the principal always makes some *clichéd comments on stage which puts all the students to sleep. However, at UNSW, it is absolutely not the case! The session *kicks off with a party!

*B4 everything gets started, the week b4 session starts is called *"o"-week with the "o" standing for orientation. There are lots of parties regardless of whether it is o-week, during *session, or end of session. The cool thing is that the university is facilitated with a well-equipped party place or "夜店" as Taiwanese call it. In the parties,*ppl get to know each other by dancin',drinkin' and *playin' pool together.

Dancing is the most interesting part of parties. If u r currently in hsi-song's dance club now, trust me!, u made the right choice!(I was in hsi-song's dance club lol) u will def be the super star in parties since, as I have observed, whites are bad at dancing relatvie to asians.

Besides, drinkin' is something *u've gotta do in parties though *I am not a big fan of alcohol and I know u guys r still under the legal age of drinkin'. If u *dunno how to order drinks, u can either be a *"cokoholic" or learn it from me now!

Generally speaking, the most popular drink for uni. students are *cocktail and beer. In order not to make students drunk, these drinks sold at the uni. bar are usually not too strong. Cocktail is basically a combination of a soft drink or juice with a chosen liquor. It is usually served chilled with a slice of lemon on the glass. u can choose from coke, sprite and lime or orange juice combined with *vodka, martini, whiskey, brandy and tequila etc.

For example,my favourite drink is vodka lime. This is just beginners, for detailed information, plz check out "http://www.cocktail.com/"!

ok! now,u can be one of those *party animals AFTER UR 18TH BIRTHDAY and dun forget to BRING UR *ID! There are always securities checking ur ID in front of the entrance!

Here are some pix that I took in parties at my uni.
crazy party animals

drinkin' my favourite-vodka lime

party at coogee palace

dancing with my korean friend

*cliche'-----n.
*kicks off ----v.
*u've gotta-----you have go to的意思,因為說話很快的時候就會變成gotta的發音,也式很口語ㄉ用法,每天都可以聽到!
*I am not a big fan of sth.-----這是一個很美國年輕人很愛的用法,意思是我是/不是一個很喜歡什麼的人! I am a big fan of desserts!
*dunno----don't know的火星文

My Favorite Place

> I always dream to travel other countries.I want to choose a contry to travel when I finished my school work in Taiwan. Can you give me some suggestions?

This is Douglas.  well..It actually depends on ur "budget" which is very practical and what kind of feeling u like.  If u wanna go to an English speaking country and u like to be leisure,laid-back, Australia will def be a good choice!  Here we've got sunnny days almost 365 days a year and we have the most beautiful beaches.  And that's why surfing is my favorite and the most popular activity in Sydney Also, there are a great variety of food u can eat in Sydney.  Not to mention the wild creatures here, the famous kangaroos, koalas and many other animals u've never seen!  u can even see kangaroos walking on the road in rural suburbs!  I will later post more articles introducing everything mentioned in detail! hope Australia will be ur next destination! If I were here when u visit Sydney, i will be glad to be ur local tour guide haha!cheers!

btw, i have uploaded a pic of the leisure life here below. thank u for leaving a message here, it encourages me to write more and better articles for u guys, i really appreciate it!  new articles will be updated soon! be anticipating!

Good day!mate!!u'll def gonna luv this---My exchange life in Sydney,Australia!

*Good day, mates! I know u've been waiting for me *for like ages.  Here I come!  First of all,let me introduce myself.  My name is Douglas Lee.  I was one of the students in Hsi-Song three years ago(not too long ago!*lol).  I am now an exchange student in UNSW(uni. of new south wales) in Sydney,Australia.
I have been here for about 4 months and the life here is just sooo much fun!
I *can't wait to tell u about *tons of stories happened here.  I will be a local guide here showing u guys about everything here. The food, the culture, the school life, the beach and even clubbin' and drinkin' culture here!  u will *def *luv this since u can learn English and understand the REAL *OZ LIFE at the same time! *Stay tuned!

*Good day,mate!------這是澳洲人特別喜歡的打招呼方式,instead of saying "hello",they usually simply say "good day!",在澳洲這樣的打招呼方式會讓你顯的更親切!
*for ages------這是老外年輕人很愛說的,與其說"for a long time",說"for ages"是一種誇飾法表示"很久了". I havent seen a movie for
ages!I was buried in my school work!
*can't wait to do sth.-----迫不及待要作什麼事,eg:I can't wait to hang out with my friends after grounded for a whole week!
*tons of sth.------ton是公噸的意思,tons of sth.

Tips on making girlfriends and vice versa

You must be interested in music, and I am no exception. In order to trigger your motivation to read my blog, I want to talk about something different. This time, I would like to share with you an album, Face to Face by Westlife, and I want to focus on the song they sang with Diana Ross. The song is “When You Tell Me that You Love Me.” Don’t walk, but run to learn this song by heart so that you can sing this song to your girlfriend or boyfriend and then you can succeed in….The song is irresistibly touching. The chorus reads: “And baby, every time you touch me, I become a hero. I will make you safe no matter where you are, and bring you everything you ask for. Nothing is above me. I am shining like a candle in the dark when you tell me that you love me.” So, sing this song to your girlfriend or boyfriend to show your language ability and true love for him or her, and never forget to tell him or her that “I need your love to make me stronger.

My boyfrined is irresistibly handsome. My English teacher is irresistibly cute.

A melting pot with pretty women! You MUST read

Do you see a meting pot in this picture? I believe so. Last weekend, I served as a tour guide and accompanied the foreigners to Chiufen, Yieliu, and the observatory of Taipei 101. They are from Egypt, Philippines, Japan, and the United States, and all of them are well-known professors specializing in PE. In 九份, I was amazed by their abilities to buy things, ranging from combs and coasters to small wooden boxes and stone statues. Then, in the afternoon, we visited 野柳, and all of them were extremely fascinated by the “Queen Head.” While we were there, Catherine, the associate professor from Washington State University, insisted that she touch the water so that she could make sure this Pacific Ocean is the same with the one she knows in California without regard to my warning of the potential danger of falling to the ocean. Unfortunately, it was I who slipped on the slippery stone because I paid full attention to her to ensure her safety, which was really embarrassing. Finally, we went to Taipei 101, and took the fastest elevator in the world to the observatory. All in all, this was a nice trip except for my slip, and I think I can be a tour guide in the future.

(2) coaster

(4) without regard to就是「不管」「不考慮」「忽視」的意思,它的相反當然就是with regard to。

You cannot survive without a bicycle in the campus

As you can see in this picture, one of the bicycles is mine. The campus of National Taiwan University is amazingly big; last week, I ran from the building of the college of art to the language lab and I sprained my ankle. Hence, I decided to buy a bicycle so that I can ride the bike instead of walking. Generally speaking, the campus of a university is so big that you had better have a bike. When I study in National Changhua University of Education, I also bought a bike. Nevertheless, you have to keep one thing is mind. That is, you should take very good care of your bike, because there are many thieves, and some of them are professional. Thus, lock your bike even though you just leave for a very short period of time.

Word Bank:
例如sprain one's ankle/knee/foot/hand,etc

Money, Money, Money, give me money

Look at the picture, and what do you see? Sure, you see tons of books. No matter you are a graduate student or an undergraduate, the professors are likely to ask you to buy so many books. The point is that you buy the English textbooks and that can make you go bankrupt. I am not exaggerating, nor am I joking at all; nevertheless, if students want to save move, they choose to copy the books, but it is illegal to do so. So, start to save enough money now so that you can buy the textbooks once you go to college. By the way, guess how much money i have spent in buying more than thirty novels and 4 coursepacks.

Word Bank:

coursepack

Hopefully, I would like to have your comments, feedback, suggestions, and responses. By and large, the more you guys interact with me, the more I would like to share with you
